Sure,IveseensomeimrovementssinceRio。InmyhomecityofVancouver,mosteoleutouttheirrecyclingboxes。ThegroceryandcafeonFourthAvenueisflourishing。Bikesareoular,andthereareafewgas-electrichybridcarsglidingaround。Butasthisnewcenturybegins,mytwenty-somethinggenerationisbecomingincreasinglydisconnectedfromthenaturalworld。Webuyourdrinkingwaterinbottles。Weeatgeneticallymodifedorganisms。Wedrivethebiggestcarsever。Atthesametime,weareagenerationawareoftheworld—ofovertyandsocialimbalance,thelossofbiodiversity,climatechangeandtheconsequencesofglobalization—butmanyofusfeelwehaveinheritedroblemstoogreattodoanythingabout。
WhenIwaslittle,theworldwassimle。Butasayoungadult,Imlearningthataswehavetomakechoices—education,career,lifestyle—lifegetsmoreandmorecomlicated。Wearebeginningtofeelressuretoroduceandbesuccessful。Wearelearningashortsightedwayoflookingatthefuture,focusingonfour-yeargovernmenttermsandquarterlybusinessreorts。Wearetaughtthateconomicgrowthisrogress,butwearenttaughthowtoursueahay,healthyorsustainablewayofliving。Andwearelearningthatwhatwewantedforourfuturewhenwewere12wasidealisticandnaive。
TodayImnolongerachild,butImworriedaboutwhatkindofenvironmentmychildrenwillgrowuin。InJohannesburgthedelegateswilldiscusstheadotionandimlementationofdocumentsbygovernments。Yes,imortantstuff。ButtheydidthatatRio。Whatthismeetingmustreallybeaboutisresonsibility—notonlygovernmentresonsibilitybutersonalresonsibility。Wearenotcleaninguourownmess。Wearenotfacingutothericeofourlifestyles。InCanadaweknowwearewiingoutthesalmonoftheWestCoast,justaswewiedoutcodfromtheEastCoast,butwecontinueoverfishing。WekeedrivingourSUVsinthecity,eventhoughwearestartingtofeeltheeffectsofclimatechange—adirectresultofburningtoomuchfossilfuel。
Realenvironmentalchangedeendsonus。Wecantwaitforourleaders。Wehavetofocusonwhatourownresonsibilitiesareandhowwecanmakethechangehaen。
Beforegraduatingfromcollegeafewmonthsago。IworkedwiththeYaleStudentEnvironmentalCoalitiontodraftaledgeforyoungeoletosign。CalledtheRecognitionofResonsibility,theledgeisacommitmentfromourgenerationtobeaccountableandachallengetoourelderstohelusachievethisgoalandtoleadbyexamle。Itincludesalistofwaystolivemoresustainable—simlebutfundamentalthingslikereducinghouseholdgarbage,consumingless,notrelyingoncarssomuch,eatinglocallygrownfood,carryingareusablecuand,mostimortant,gettingoutintonature。
Butinthe10yearssinceRio,Ihavelearnedthataddressingourleadersisnotenough。AsGandhisaidmanyyearsago,“Wemustbecomethechangewewanttosee。”Iknowchangeisossible,becauseIamchanging,stillfiguringoutwhatIthink。Iamstilldecidinghowtolivemylife。Thechallengesaregreat,butifweaccetindividualresonsibilityandmakesustainablechoices,wewillrisetothechallenges,andwewillbecomeartoftheositivetideofchange。
