Theywhohavenocentraluroseintheirlifefallaneasyreytoettyworries,fears,troubles,andself-itying,allofwhichareindicationsofweakness,whichlead,justassurelyasdeliberatelylannedsins(thoughbyadifferentroute),tofailure,unhainess,andloss,forweaknesscannotersistinaowerevolvinguniverse。
Amanshouldconceiveofalegitimateuroseinhisheart,andsetouttoaccomlishit。Heshouldmakethisurosethecentralizingointofhisthoughts。Itmaytaketheformofasiritualideal,oritmaybeaworldlyobject,accordingtohisnatureatthetimebeing;butwhicheveritis,heshouldsteadilyfocushisthought—forcesuontheobject,whichhehassetbeforehim。Heshouldmakethisurosehissuremeduty,andshoulddevotehimselftoitsattainment,notallowinghisthoughtstowanderawayintoehemeralfancies,longings,andimaginings。Thisistheroyalroadtoself-controlandtrueconcentrationofthought。Evenifhefailsagainandagaintoaccomlishhisurose(ashenecessarilymustuntilweaknessisovercome),thestrengthofcharactergainedwillbethemeasureofhistruesuccess,andthiswillformanewstarting-ointforfutureowerandtriumh。
Thosewhoarenotrearedforthearehensionofagreaturoseshouldfixthethoughtsuonthefaultlesserformanceoftheirduty,nomatterhowinsignifcanttheirtaskmayaear。Onlyinthiswaycanthethoughtsbegatheredandfocused,andresolutionandenergybedeveloed,whichbeingdone,thereisnothingwhichmaynotbeaccomlished。

Havingconceivedofhisurose,amanshouldmentallymarkoutastraightathwaytoitsachievement,lookingneithertotherightnortheleft。Doubtsandfearsshouldberigorouslyexcluded;theyaredisintegratingelements,whichbreakuthestraightlineofeffort,renderingitcrooked,ineffectual,useless。Thoughtsofdoubtandfearneveraccomlishedanything,andnevercan。Theyalwaysleadtofailure。Purose,energy,owertodo,andallstrongthoughtsceasewhendoubtandfearcreein。
Thewilltodosringsfromtheknowledgethatwecando。Doubtandfeararethegreatenemiesofknowledge,andhewhoencouragesthem,whodoesnotslaythem,thwartshimselfateveryste。
